INTRODUCTION
A museum is a place where objects or materials that represent nature are assembled and conserved. There are different types of museums depending on what specimen it preserves.
Function of museum
- Social role – Museums serves to preserve the cultural values.
- They help to display some of the communities diverse exhibition
- They also serve educational role i.e. they serve as learning centers for students who will learn how to care, collect and maintain these materials
- They help in the reconstruction or restoration of materials back to look as original as they were
- They offer or produce scientific publication
- .They also help in arousing scientific interest.
- They also helps people to understand and appreciate science of conservation especially of our environment
Types of museums
- Aesthetic– This is where materials are collected and preserved for their beauty or aesthetic value . these may include things like paintings , sculptures , decorative arts , antiques or things of the old age
- Historical museums– they are those that collect and preserve materials of historical perspective. they present materials showing events in chronological order e.g. political history and archeological history
- Science museums– These are museums of natural science , applied science and technical museums . There aims is to communicate scientific information in three dimensional perspective ie scientifically, spiritually and mentally. This help in giving information for research workers and progress.
NB; The earliest museum was set in Paris in 1700 -1800.
Types of science museums depends on the type of collection e.g.
- Ornithology – deals with birds
- Herpetology – deals with reptiles
- Mammology – deals with mammals
- Entomology – deals with insects
- Oestology – deals with bones
- Herbarium – deals with plants
